When you are living off the grid, you want to be sure to have a reliable way to heat your home. Even if you live in the southern climates, you will have some cold days and even colder nights. Always keep in mind that when it comes to heating and cooling any home, the smaller the home, the easier and more efficient it is to heat. It really goes without saying but I’ll say it anyway…you will also want to be sure that your home is insulated well. A properly insulated home will retain the heat that you have worked so hard to provide.
I like to have two or more ways to heat my home and when living off the grid, having a backup plan for heat is necessary. Depending on the climate, your main heating system will get a lot of use and it WILL break down at some point. Having multiple heat sources also helps to balance your fuel supply. For example, you don’t want to rely solely on your wood burning stove and burn up your whole winter’s supply of wood when you can change between heat sources and stretch that wood supply to the spring time.
Below, I offer some ideas on safe and efficient ways to keep your home warm on the cold days and cool on the hot days.
One of the most economical ways to heat a small home is with some type of wood-burning stove. I think every off-grid home should have a wood-burning stove, even if you do not have a wood source readily available to you. Chances are, you can always find a fallen tree or large tree branch that someone will let you clear off of their land or the side of the road.
I recommend buying a stove that can also be used for cooking. If set up correctly, a wood-burning stove can provide heat and cooking fuel, using minimal amounts of wood. Here are some of the popular wood stoves available…

Propane is a safe and efficient way to heat a small home or individual room. However, it does require an occasional tank fill-up. Propane is a clean-burning fuel that doesn’t always require venting but should never be left on unobserved.
Propane heaters are available in wall-mount versions but the most common and quick to set up are the portable versions. Here are a few of the more popular propane heaters available…
If you’re looking for reliable supplemental heating, the Dyna-Glo 30,000 BTU Liquid Propane Blue Flame Vent Free Wall Heater will blend seamlessly into your home, bringing heat and comfort to your space.
Dyna-Glo’s Blue Flame Wall Heaters use convection technology similar to your central home heating system. Blue flame heaters send heat outward, and then upwards to create a wide range of circulation. Using this technology, blue flame heaters will warm the air first, and then the surrounding objects.
